If you ever want to start an argument with a geologist or paleo-enthusiast, just pull this out. Most frequently referred to as stromatolite fossil (layers of cynobacteria thought to be responsible for the increased oxygen levels in the atmosphere and considered to be the earliest fossil evidence on earth) they are in fact a poorly researched occurance. Found in the Sahara, the most likely explanation is a concretion made from slow deposition in mineral rich water and therefore are lithological rather than biological. Whatever the case, with their geometric flower like shapes and patterns, grainy organic textural feel and rusty orange coloring they make striking decor, not to mention an engaging conversation piece!
